We have provided an explanation of some of the terms that you may notice used on the website that you may be unfamiliar with.

ADSL - Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line. This is a type of broadband technology providing you a permanenet connection to the Internet by using a digital connection over your existing phone line.

Authentication - This is the process where our server verifies your username, password and telephone number details prior to allowing you access to the Internet via our system.

Bandwidth - The data carrying capacity of a connection generally measured in bits/second.

Bit - Is short for Binary digit and is the smallest measurement of data.

Bps - Bits per second. This refers to the speed of the data transfer of your connection.

Broadband - The word broadband is used to generally describe communications that allow several different channels simultaneously down a line or use a wider range of frequencies to transmit a single data stream. When most people use the word broadband what they are really describing is 'high bandwidth' provided by such services as Wireless, DSL, Satellite and Cable technologies.

Browser - A browser is the software by which you may view Internet web pages and if you are using a Microsoft Operating System such as Windows XP you will have a browser such as Internet Explorer available to you.

Byte - A byte consists of 8 bits, both computer storage capacity and the rate of download to your computer is measured in bytes. Most common is MB or a megabyte which is 1 million bytes and GB or gigabytes which is 1 thousand megabytes.

Colocation - This is a service offered by Integrity to house servers on our premises owned by external businesses.

Cookie - A cookie is information (usually your preferences) that a website records on your hard disk so that it may retrieve the cookie next time you visit the website.

Domain - Companies or organisations register and host a domain name to allow users to locate and identify their website and send email. An example would be integritynet.com.au. This will allow us to have
www.integritynet.com.au as a web address and
for email.

Downloading -This refers to the process of information travelling down from the Internet via the telephone line onto your computer. Receiving emails, viewing web pages, playing games and listening to internet radio are all counted as downloading and should be carefully monitored. You can monitor this information from the members area.

Firewall - A firewall can be both hardware or software put into place to prevent access from unauthorised users to an internal computer network.

FTP - File Transfer Protocol is the process of transfering files to and from the Internet. There are many programs available for FTP such as WSFTP.

Internet - The Internet is the largest computer network linking computers all around the world. The World Wide Web or www is a protocol within the Internet that allows you to view web pages. This is the most widely accessed area of the Internet.

IP address - An IP address is a 32-bit number that identifies each sender or receiver of information that is sent in packets across the Internet.

ISP - This means Internet Service Provider such as Integrity Network Solutions.

LAN - Local Area Network. This refers to a network that is limited to a localised area such as an office building.

Logging on - When you log on you are in the process of dialling out to connect to the Internet.

Modem - A modem allows your digital computer and the analogue phone line to communicate successfully so you may connect to the Internet. Without a modem you cannot connect to the Internet (unless you are using wireless technology). There are different types of modems for dial up and ADSL.

Operating System - An operating system such as Windows XP is a type of software usually sold with your computer that allows other software such as Microsoft Office to operate on your computer. Microsoft Operating Systems also include a web browser and email client.

POP - Point of Presence. Integrity has a number of POP's in the Gosford and Sydney areas which are points of entry to the Internet.

POP3 - Post Office Protocol. This is a protocol that allows your email client to connect to our mail servers and download any waiting email.
- Username - Your username is the name you choose when you create your account with Integrity. You must use your username to log on to the Internet and will also act as your main email address such as username "myname" your first email address becomes

Password - Your password is used for security reasons to confirm the correct username is being used to gain entry to our system.

Spam - This means unsolicited email or 'junk mail' and is considered to be bad netiquette (Internet etiquette) to do so.

SSL Certificate - Secure Sockets Layer Certificate. You should be able to view the SSL Certificate on a website to verify its authenticity. This assures you of a degree of protection when browsing certain websites.

URL - Uniform Resource Locator or simply the address you type into the Internet to go to a website.

WAN - Wide Area Network. This refers to a network that has a wider coverage such as connecting cities.

Wireless - Wireless technology allows you to connect to the Internet without the use of a telephone line.

World Wide Web - The World Wide Web is an area of the Internet that allows people to view web pages, most will have a www prefix on the address.
